Founder, Prop Firm Compare · bought and passed a 150K No Activation Fee account, now trading it funded, with $120,000 in lifetime Topstep payouts

4.1/5Updated October 2026

Topstep is the oldest name in futures prop trading, and it has one of the clearest rule sets I have traded under: hit the target, meet the consistency target and do not break the one rule, the max loss limit. I bought a 150K on the No Activation Fee plan with my own money, no gifted or sponsored account, passed the evaluation and am now trading it funded. Across my Topstep accounts I have taken $120,000 in lifetime payouts, so this is a firm I have been paid by many times, not one I am still testing. The thing to understand before buying is that the evaluation bills monthly, so how quickly you pass decides what the account really costs.

What I liked

One rule to manage during the evaluation, the max loss limit, with no daily loss limit unless you choose to add one

Credentials arrived instantly after buying

Support was easy to deal with and I had no issues

$120,000 in lifetime payouts, and they have always come through quickly

TopstepX, Topstep's own platform, is included, so there is no separate platform to set up

A clear route from evaluation to Express Funded to Live Funded, where payouts are uncapped and daily payouts open up after 30 winning days

90/10 profit split on Express Funded payouts

What to watch

The evaluation bills monthly, $229 for a 150K on the No Activation Fee plan, so a slow pass costs more than the headline price

The Standard plan is cheaper each month but charges a $149 activation fee once you pass

A 55% consistency target applies during the evaluation, so a single big day can hold you back

Per request payout caps are modest without the Responsible Trading Advantage: $5,000 on a 150K on the standard payout path

Payout methods vary in speed, from instant to 5 to 10 business days for wire transfers

My Experience With Topstep

I bought a 150K on the No Activation Fee plan and traded it on TopstepX. Credentials came through instantly. The plan costs $229 a month against $199 on Standard, but Standard adds a $149 activation fee once you pass. If you expect to pass within a couple of months, paying more each month and skipping the activation fee works out cheaper. Topstep describes Standard as built for traders still learning and No Activation Fee for disciplined traders, which is a fair way to put it.

I left the Responsible Trading Advantage off. Turning it on adds a $3,000 daily loss limit on a 150K, doubles your per request payout caps and takes $30 a month off the price. I would rather trade without a daily cap, and the only rule I wanted to manage was the max loss limit.

On a 150K, the evaluation asks for $9,000 profit inside a $4,500 max loss limit, with up to 15 minis or 150 micros. The 55% consistency target means your best day cannot be more than 55% of your total profit, so spreading the target across several days is what gets you through. Current pricing and codes are on the Topstep discount codes page, and the full lineup is on the challenges page.

My Payout Experience

I have taken $120,000 in lifetime payouts from Topstep. Payouts have been fast, and I have never had a problem with support along the way. My newest 150K account is still working towards its first request, but the record across my earlier accounts is what this review rests on.

For context on what qualifies, an Express Funded account has two payout paths: five winning days of $150 or more, or three trading days with your best day at or below 40% of your profit, which comes with higher caps. Each request is capped at 50% of your balance, up to $5,000 on a 150K on the standard path. That is Topstep's published policy. My own record is the $120,000 above, and it is my experience, not a promise of what anyone else will see.

Which Account Would I Choose?

Kane's Pick: 150K, No Activation Fee, Responsible Trading Advantage off

This is the setup I bought and would buy again. No activation fee once you pass, 15 minis to work with, and only one rule to manage. If you are comfortable with a daily loss limit, switching the Responsible Trading Advantage on is worth considering: double payout caps and $30 a month off the price. I would rather not have the limit.

Standard makes more sense if you are still learning and expect to fail an evaluation or two, since the monthly cost is lower. Compare sizes on the challenges page.

Who I Would Recommend Topstep To

Choose Topstep if you want simple evaluation rules, quick setup and a clear route to a Live Funded account with no payout cap. It suits patient traders who pass steadily rather than in one session.

If you want a one time fee instead of a monthly subscription, compare Lucid Trading or My Funded Futures. My main reason for recommending Topstep so far is how simple the rules are to trade under.

Kane’s Topstep Review FAQs

The 150K on the No Activation Fee plan with the Responsible Trading Advantage off. There is no activation fee once you pass and no daily loss limit, only the max loss limit. Traders happy with a daily limit can switch the advantage on for double payout caps and a lower monthly price.

Yes, more than most. There is one main rule to follow in the evaluation, the max loss limit, and the Standard plan is priced for traders who may need more than one attempt. The monthly billing means beginners should aim to pass steadily rather than let the subscription run for months.

The evaluation is billed monthly. The Standard plan adds a $149 activation fee once you pass. The 55% consistency target applies during the evaluation, and per request payout caps are modest unless you use the consistency path or the Responsible Trading Advantage.

Not through Prop Firm Compare. Topstep does not work with affiliates, so there is no partner code for it. Topstep does run its own promotions from time to time, and the Responsible Trading Advantage takes $10 to $30 a month off the No Activation Fee plan if you accept a daily loss limit.

Patient traders who want simple evaluation rules and a defined path to a Live Funded account, where payouts are uncapped and daily payouts open up after 30 winning days.

Topstep has the longest track record and one of the clearest routes to live capital. The trade is cost structure: monthly billing and, on Standard, an activation fee, where firms like Lucid Trading charge once.

Monthly billing during the evaluation, the $149 activation fee on the Standard plan, the 55% evaluation consistency target and modest per request payout caps on Express Funded accounts.
