Direct execution lets you place orders from TradingView itself, usually through a Tradovate connection. You trade on the chart, and the order routes to your prop account.
Charts inside a platform, like Topstep's TopstepX, give you TradingView charts built into the firm's own software. How to Connect a Prop Firm Account to TradingView
The exact steps vary by firm, but the direct-execution route follows a common pattern. Work through it once and it stays set up.
First, confirm your account supports direct execution, since a charts-only firm cannot place orders from TradingView. Then activate any required data or add-on, which for most firms means enabling the TradingView add-on inside Tradovate.
Next, open the Trading Panel in TradingView and select the Tradovate connection. Use the Demo option for an evaluation account and the live option once funded, then log in with your firm credentials.
Finally, select the correct account and the exact tradable contract, not a chart-only symbol. Test a small entry, a stop, and a target before you trade actively, so you know the routing works. Setup details differ by firm, so follow the firm's own guide.
TradingView Costs, Data and Execution Limits
TradingView is not always free once you trade a prop account, so price it out first. A few costs and limits catch traders by surprise.
Start with the TradingView plan and any add-on. The Tradovate TradingView add-on carries a small monthly fee on some plans, and higher TradingView tiers add features. On top of that, exchange market data for futures usually carries its own charge.
Then check the execution details. Confirm the order types you need, whether you get DOM or Level 2 depth, how bracket orders and stops behave, and the firm's policy during an outage.
