What is leverage in futures trading? Leverage lets you control a full futures contract while posting only a small part of its value as margin. On US exchange-traded futures, that small deposit gives you exposure to the contract's entire price movement.
This is the part beginners often miss. Your profit and loss follow the contract's full price, not the margin you posted. So a loss can be large compared with the money you put down.

Futures leverage is the gap between the value you control and the margin you post. A few plain terms make it click.
The notional value is the full value of the contract you control. The margin is the smaller deposit you put down to open and hold the position. Leverage is how large that notional value is compared with the margin.
The key point is exposure. You post margin, but you are exposed to the contract's full profit or loss. That is why a small move in the market can be a large move on your deposit.
In short: Leverage means a small margin controls a much larger contract value. Your gains and losses track the full contract, not the margin you posted.
Futures contract leverage comes from the contract's size. Each contract has a price and a multiplier, and the two together set the full value you control.
Take the ES mini, the E-mini S&P 500 futures contract. Its multiplier is $50 per index point. With the S&P 500 near 7,750 in August 2026, one ES mini controls about $387,500 in value, which is 7,750 multiplied by $50.
To open that position, you post margin of roughly $17,000 in overnight terms, far less than the $387,500 you control. The margin supports the position, but it does not cap your loss. If the market moves against you, the loss follows the full $387,500 contract, not the $17,000 you posted.

You can work out your leverage with one simple formula. It compares what you control against what you posted.
Leverage formula: Leverage ratio = contract value ÷ margin required.
Using the same ES mini example, the contract value is about $387,500 with the S&P 500 near 7,750. Divide that by the roughly $17,000 initial margin and you get about 23:1. This figure uses the exchange initial, or overnight, margin.
Day-trading margin changes the picture. Many brokers offer an intraday margin near $500 on the ES mini, which pushes leverage much higher.

Margin and leverage are linked but not the same. Margin is the amount required to open or hold a position. Leverage is your exposure relative to that amount.
There are a few types of margin to know. Initial margin is what you need to open a position. Maintenance margin is the lower amount you must keep to hold it. Intraday margin is a reduced amount some brokers allow for day trades, while overnight margin is the higher amount to hold past the close.
Here is the trap. A lower margin requirement does not make the contract safer. The contract value and its price moves stay the same, so a smaller deposit just means more leverage.

The best way to feel leverage is to price out one move. We will use the same ES mini near 7,750, with a $17,000 margin and a $50,000 account.
A 1% move in the S&P 500 changes the contract value by about $3,875, which is 1% of the $387,500 you control. That same $3,875 looks very different depending on what you compare it against.
Against the $17,000 margin, a 1% move is about a 23% swing. Against a $50,000 account, the same move is about 7.8%. This is leverage in action, since a small market move becomes a large move on your margin.

No, and this catches out many new traders. A lower margin requirement does not change the contract itself.
The multiplier, the tick value, and the dollar value of each price move all stay the same. A cheaper margin just lets you control the same risk with less money down, which means more leverage, not less.
Using too much of your buying power leaves little room to absorb a normal loss. If the market moves against you and your balance runs low, the broker may liquidate the position. And in fast markets, a stop order may fill at a worse price than you set, so your real loss can be larger than planned.
Micro futures use less money, but not always less leverage. That difference matters.
A micro contract like the MES micro has a smaller multiplier, tick value, dollar movement, and margin per contract than the ES mini. But the percentage leverage can be about the same, because both the value and the margin scale down together.
With the S&P 500 near 7,750 in August 2026, the MES micro controls about $38,750, one tenth of the ES mini. Its leverage still works out near 23:1 on initial margin. Holding several micro contracts stacks that exposure, so five MES micros carry the same risk as half an ES mini.

Prop firm accounts do not change the math of the contract. The multiplier and the dollar profit or loss on each move stay exactly the same as any other futures account.
What differs is the money behind the label. An advertised account size, like a $50,000 account, may not reflect the cash you can actually lose. Your real limit is usually the drawdown, not the headline number.
Your usable risk depends on the drawdown, the daily loss limit, and the contract limits, not the account size alone. You can keep leverage under control with a simple routine before each trade. The goal is to size the position to your risk, not to your buying power.
Before you enter, work out your risk from the stop distance, the tick value, and the number of contracts. Check the margin rules, keep a buffer above the minimum, and use smaller contracts like the MES micro when the full-size ES mini is too much.
Risk formula: Stop distance in ticks × tick value × number of contracts = intended position risk.
